Australian diners are becoming ever more discerning – what makes a memorable eating and drinking environment? How does the design of a space contribute to it’s success?

Artichoke magazine presented their 18th Artichoke Night School: An Appetite for Design at Space Furniture, Fortitude Valley on Wednesday 5th August. The event featured our very own Angela Layton, as well as Justin Northrop from Techne and Ryan Squires from Brisbane Restaurant, Esquire. Together, they brought their design ideas from Brisbane and Melbourne, as well as  some compelling insights to a client’s perspective of the design process.

There were some interesting discussions around the evolution of hospitality design in Brisbane and Melbourne, as well as the trend towards more casual and affordable dining options for the greater population. Ryan Squires from Esquire spoke of a Chef’s perspective of the design process, and the importance of understanding how each element of a space will work within a daily routine.

Both Angela and Justin emphasised the value of involving a venue’s team early on in the design process – from understanding the ‘front of house’, to branding and of course, the kitchen and it’s operations. Angela talked of embracing a collaborative effort in the design process to achieve the best outcome – one which Arkhefield has proven successful with recent projects such as Stokehouse at River Quay and the Urbane redevelopment.

It was a great night with over 90 attendees from the general public and design profession. Also, a wonderful opportunity to share insights and ideas about the world of hospitality design.
