Atalanta was designed for a longstanding restaurateur client who sought to create a ‘Bar and Greek’ – equal parts bar and restaurant – in Brisbane’s Portside Wharf precinct.

The brief required the venue to be equally as inviting as a restaurant, as it is as a bar – to be bustling, bright and fresh during the day and buzzing and vibrant at night.

Arkhefield responded by creating a space that celebrates the legend of Atalanta – the Greek Goddess of the Hunt from Spartan times  – by inscribing her story on the walls and epitomising an atmosphere of modern Greek dining within the Portside tenancy.

The restaurant embodies the simplicity of Spartan architecture with its minimal and controlled use of travertine stone, whilst the shiny brass lighting installation on the ceiling grows through the space and down the walls to remind us of Atalanta’s story (below).

ATALANTA’S STORY

Atalanta was a warrior goddess who was known for her fierce independence, competitiveness, and physical skills as well as her beauty and bravery – and her story is inscribed on the walls of Atalanta Bar + Greek. As an amazing huntress and expert with her bow and arrow, plenty of men were seeking her hand in marriage. Her father insisted she marry, but she negotiated a compromise – agreeing to willingly marry any man who could outrun her in a race. A man by the name of Hippomenes fell in love with Atalanta, and knowing he had no chance of winning the race, requested the help of others who gave him three golden apples to throw down during the race to slow Atalanta down. He won; they fell in love and married. Legend has it that Zeus recognized the greatness of their love for each other and turned them into a constellation of stars, allowing the couple to remain together, racing through the heavens side by side forever.
