The proposal to establish an affordable housing/mixed used development in Mitchelton’s high street need to respond to, and gain acceptance from, the local community.
Arkhefield’s carefully considered design for Blackwood Street addressed the challenge and set the standard for future development in the area, while providing a model for urban renewal.
Blackwood Street combines ground level retail, one level of commercial office space, one level of affordable rental housing and one level of market for sale units. The units cater for the active elderly, while the retail and commercial tenancies complement the existing street fabric.
The building is oriented around a central courtyard, maximising natural light and ventilation. Situated in the pedestrian-friendly heart of Mitchelton, the site was chosen for its scale, zoning, residential orientation, mixed use potential and proximity to transport.
Client: Brisbane Housing Company
Scale: 2224m2 with 375m2 of Retail Space
