One William Street
Arkhefield + ARM Architecture were finalists in the competition to design the new One William Street tower in Brisbane’s CBD. As a landmark office tower on the waterfront of the Brisbane River, it has the potential to provide approximately 75,000m2 office accommodation for the private and public sector.
We looked at the project from a public realm perspective, seeing One William Street as a stepping stone between the city grid and the Brisbane River. It was an exciting opportunity to energise the southernmost tip of the CBD.
Our design response was to place the tower on an angle to Alice Street, aimed at protecting views to and from Parliament House and surrounding properties. This dynamically prevented any sense of front side or back side, giving the building a sense of being in rotation, as if emerging naturally from the river.
The architectural strategy was derived from a series of formal concepts, including a carved light cone and a virtual double helix, while the detail accommodated a broad range of pragmatic and finer grain workplace, urban design and landscape issues.
