Queensland Theatre Company
Over the past 10 years, Arkhefield has worked with the Queensland Theatre Company to refurbish their creative and cross-functional spaces in South Brisbane.
Initial works began in 2003 with the amalgamation of three existing buildings, including the refurbishment of the old Evans Deakin Industries buildings, and the addition of a new rehearsal theatre to the site. In 2006, the company required a theatre workshop to support the earlier works and provide space for the creation of full scale mock ups of their theatre sets within the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC). The workshop is naturally ventilated and opens up to the street, allowing a level of engagement with the public throughout production. Three new insertions were added to the site in 2010. A new entrance and courtyard space for theatre staff, patrons and guests has provided a space to enjoy when productions are on show at the Bille Brown Studio, day and night.
Throughout these works, our aim has been to create a unified space that serves cross-functional purposes and caters for the needs of the entire company and their patrons. Grouping of the various functions and developing a consistency of design forms and finishes has provided a successful, cohesive space.
