With a client brief guided by Japanese design principles, Satou House was conceived as a journey through a series of courtyards and pavilions.
The spaces are private and introverted, providing the opportunity to create an individual atmosphere in each. Water elements—river, pool and pond—are experienced in a different manner from each space.
A concrete spine through the house provides a focal point for the interior, while serving as a heat sink in winter. Landscaping is closely entwined with the built form, with gardens woven into the building footprint. As collectors of art and ceramics, the clients also sought to create a gallery for their collection, with key pieces being integrated into the house during the design phase. The desire for simplicity over audaciousness has resulted in a beautiful home with subtly crafted details.
