With a string of thwarted proposals, the historic Barracks precinct on Brisbane’s city fringe had sat vacant for 20 years. Arkhefield revived the project and realised the potential of the site by challenging the brief and rethinking the master plan.
The previous residential focus was shifted to a dynamic mixed-use development, combining commercial, retail, dining and entertainment. Strong emphasis was placed on the public realm and thoroughfare. A series of lanes draws on the original plan of the site, articulating the Barracks with the nearby transport hubs, Suncorp Stadium and Caxton Street precinct. Working to strict heritage guidelines, the unique characteristics of the site and buildings were preserved and restored.
The Barracks has proven highly successful for the developer and tenants, and hugely popular with the public. The landmark development comprises offices, cinemas, a supermarket, fresh food markets, speciality retail and dining, including the Arkhefield-designed Libertine restaurant.
