The DA has recently been approved for an important social housing and community hub development located in Cairns for The Salvation Army.
Our client has a long-standing relationship with local indigenous elder and ceremonial leader of the Gimuy Walubara Yidinji people, Uncle Peter Bumi Hyde, who was engaged to meet with the project team and provide critical input into the cultural safety and design of the project.
Cultural safety, in the context of design, refers to making spaces and places that feel welcoming, respectful, safe, and appropriate for First Nation peoples in parallel with other cultural groups. We deeply value the opportunity to learn from Uncle Peter, who has helped us form a better understanding of the site and its context from a broader perspective.

Focusing on a human-centred approach to design, the project will provide homely, non-institutional spaces to live. The design responds to the Cairns climate and tropical urbanism principles.
